HSDPA Will Transform Cellular Backhaul

Cover Image
The introduction of HSDPA (High Speed Downlink Packet Access) is expected to enable mobile operators to exploit the full potential of 3G technology by delivering mobile broadband services to rival fixed-line offerings. With a peak throughput of 14.4 Mbps per user;HSDPA can significantly shorten the time required to download rich-media files to an HSDPA handset. Such high capacity performance;however;comes at a price: an exponential increase in cellular backhaul bandwidth. With average revenue per user declining because of competitive pressures;uncontrolled backhaul operating expenses and capital equipment costs could jeopardize the entire business case for HSDPA and mobile broadband. This document explains why cellular providers should reconsider their cellular backhaul strategy and evaluates how a hybrid solution for HSDPA backhaul will enable mobile operators to realize their business objectives.
